Yes, if you are married filing jointly and your combined income is less than 130,000 you can claim a tuition deduction of 4000USD. If you are above 130K but less than 160K your deduction is 2000USD. If you are around borderline for 130K, just buy a traditional IRA which reduces your AGI. Read this part of Pub 970 if you need more help

Advocacy Action Item August 2009 - update
The summer August recess is in progress and the lawmakers are still in their constituencies. This is an opportunity for us to meet with them and address our issues and present solutions in preparation for the upcoming CIR. We must push for our agenda to get our provisions in the base bill as CIR is being drafted currently. If we do not get our provisions in the base bill then it is much harder to get them attached to the bill in the form of amendments.
IV therefore requests its members, to continue to call up and start scheduling lawmaker meetings NOW. Please take appointments with your local lawmakers of both houses of Congress. our members have been taking appointments and so far the feedback has been extremely positive. These meetings have enabled us to enlighten the lawmaker offices and engage in constructive dialog that not only addresses our issues and concerns but also provides solutions to the backlogs.

I travelled to India first time after coming to USA. The airline people did not take my I94 from me. I was not aware if I had to turn it in. I came back and got another I94. Now what do I do with my old I94? My 140/485 is in progress.

Recently, I made my own PP photos using http://www.epassportphoto.com/
This is a great service - It creates a jpeg file from a picture that you upload, and you can choose the "free" option in which you can save the jpeg file with 4-6 pictures in one frame (A 4" x 6" photo can yield 6 pp photos of 2" x 2"), and take it to Walgreens/Costco/Kinkos for a printout for $0.25 each. Otherwise you pay about $8-$12 for 2 photos at the same stores!!
For a family of 4, this equates to savings of ~ $40!!!
The site has all the tools for meeting various types of visa/pp/etc photo requirements for various countries.
Most WOLF camera and RITZ camera stores do the same thing for free. I have done this many times. Use a good digital camera and take the pics in memory stick or USB and they crop the photo to the right passport specifications. All you pay for is the print which is $0.25 or less.

They are just mistaking his EAD card for PR card. My EAD was approved on April 27 and the status says
"Card production ordered/Oath Document sent".
It is just misleadig for a lot of people they can misread it as the PR card.

I am on the same boat with you. I am on H4 and is continuously exploring all possibilities that would enable me to work. I wonder how volunteering for work in one's field would be illegal. You will not be paid hence there will not be papertrails, taxes or any documents that can be traced to you working (illegally?). Besides, how will they know it, if there's no additional income in your bank accounts coming from your wages or salary? Isn't it? If the illegals could work in the shadows w/o getting penalized, hell, they even would have a chance to get a blue card in the future enabling their spouses to work. There's a very little chance that the USCIS or ICE would penalize you. Don't know even if they would bother give time to it.
Even if they would bother, you are highly educated, could hire a lawyer and easily explain it to court. Your current immigration lawyer is just too paranoid and is unreasonable.

I am pretty pretty sure most of us have a lot of H1b friends we can talk to about immigration voice and bring them on board.
Join this effort and make a difference. Joining at the last moment when legislative debate is taking place may be too late a time to join and bring more members.
Email me at jay@Immigrationvoice.org and you can start helping today. All we need is 45 minutes of your time per day for a few days until we reach a 10,000 volunteer mark.
Help us make this chain-recruitment work. We cannot have the same few 20 people trying to bring new people on board coz those 20-25 members dont have unlimited friends they know who CAN be involved in this.
